• A friendship that began in 1977 with two girls who grew up across the road from one another. Times were tough and both of them loved exploring creative ways to be "different". Kerri Barrie was the older of the two, who stood tall and statuesque even at the age of nine. Today Kerri has achieved her Arts degree with a major in textiles and as a senior hair stylist, is always changing her look with an advanced sense of style and independence. Melanie Jones was always fascinated by Kerri's individualism, and within herself, gained confidence in sewing and salvaging to re-invent new ways for old things to keep current and unique.

Kerri's Mum June-ran a music school, and this is how the girls first met. Melanie came over for music lessons and joined their performing group named the BLUEBELLS. One of their hit tracks to perform was the hit from 1953 " she wears RED FEATHERS AND A HULA HULA SKIRT". "It was easy to create a name for our shop, as this song has such an impact on us both" says Melanie. "It was a time in our lives where we got to dress up and perform - which would become the fabric of my soul" .Kerri's Mum June Barrie, was known for her flamboyant and eccentric nature, she would welcome all in the neighbourhood over every Friday night, we would sing songs and gather throughout our teenage years.

Swap meets, Salvage Yards, The local Tip, Auctions - were a weekly part of our growing up. We learned how to grab a bargain, to see in things and clothes and bric-a-brac, what many would walk past. Red Feathers and a Hula Skirt was created to offer the general public an alternative to the "disposable" life in which we live. "Kerri is an inspiration with her commitment to reducing the footprint on our earth, she has always been the trailblazer" says Melanie. “ It's easy to buy and throw out over your lifetime, without questioning where it's going and how it is affecting out planet.”

So, with an eclectic mix of LIFE WEARS, Red Feathers and a Hula Skirt will be able to offer something to anyone - "I want to be surrounded by beautiful things, make gorgeous things and teach people to create lovely things for themselves" Kerri says. The girls has so much passion for this to occur, they hope that you will enjoy what is on offer and support their business.
